Greensand Way: Stage 2, Witley Station to Hurtwood Car Park 6, pre-flight prep

Kicking the new month off with a long walk, making the most of a clear diary weekend. It’s another glorious winter day, but pretty mild so I’m expecting lots of mud! Taking the train to the apparent ghost station that is Witley and looking forward to a ride back home courtesy of Mr C from an apparently random car park (with a name reminiscent of a gulag), which actually has review on Google.

View from the GWR train just after leaving Dorking Deepdene

The view from the train is beautiful; the ridge of the North Downs clearly visible. There is the North Downs Way that (mostly) follows the escarpment at least in this section near Dorking. The GW (again, mostly) tracks below that, following the sandy ridge that marks a change in the geology from the relatively young chalk of the North Downs. Lots more for all you geology geeks here.

Geology nerdiness

Map: We’re still on OS Explorer OL33, but move onto a bit of OS Explorer 145. In the grand scheme of things this is for such a small portion of the walk I haven’t bought the physical map so will be relying on digital versions for the final 3-4km today.

No missing me on a remote mountainside.....

In the bag: contained in my trusty Osprey Hikelite 18 litre day bag, in a natty bright red so I’m easy to spot, there is:

  • Obligatory flask of earl grey, hot

  • OL33 OS Explorer Map

  • Relevant charging cables & battery pack

  • 1.5litre bladderpack water

  • Lunch, contained in a dazzling array of complex food containers which incorporate in-built cutlery.

Set to go.....
